Online Learning SuccessInformationWHAT TO EXPECT AS A STUDENT NEW TO ONLINE LEARNING Most folks agree than online learning is very different from on campus learning. Frequently, student and teacher roles are different, the curriculum and course materials are presented differently, and assessment and evaluation is conducted differently. Let me start with some very broad thoughts to help start you on the path of deciding if online learning is right for you. So, we have students and teachers just like in most educational activities, and now we add computers and software. Hum...great opportunities for new methods of presenting materials and equally great opportunities for frustration when they don't do what we expect them to do. One goal of online teachers is to make the technology as invisible as possible. Student and teachers may never see each other. The list of Advantages and Disadvantages along with the Communication document will describe different types of methods of communicating at a distance. Your challenge is to evaluate the impact this will have on your learning and adapt to it as soon as possible so you can focus on learning the course material. You will learn many characteristics of successful online learners, but the one that seems to be most important is self-motivation. Responsibility for completing course requirements lies squarely on your shoulders. The convenience factor is an incredible draw. The format of learning when and where you are most ready to be the best student you can be is very appealing. Evaluate what it takes to make online learning work for you. Online learning is not for everyone, but when it's right, it can be a remarkable learning experience. The first task is for you to take one or more of the readiness surveys listed in related web sites. You are probably thinking, this should have been done before you enrolled. Well perhaps, but the benefit of doing it now is to make you aware of the demands of online learning after you have been inside an online course. You may find that online learning will cause you some challenges. There is no better time than the present to head them off before they become a problem. Check out the websites in Related Website to learn more. Then take a look at the Suggestions for Online Success Many courses require Discussion Board participation, email, phone, or even an online chat or two. I think it's safe to say that your style of communicating with your friends will NOT be appropriate for your online courses. Take another look at the Communication document this time focusing on effective communication strategies and netiquette. Related Web SitesIs Online Learning Right for You?
