Learning Outcomes
Students will:
Develop time management, priority setting, and goal setting skills and avoid procrastination to become effective college students and online learners.
Overview
We all have 168 hours per week. How will you slice and dice your hours to enhance your chances of becoming a successful student? There are four modules in this tutorial that will help you identify your time management strengths and challenges and develop strategies to overcome potential barriers to online success.
In the My Time (Lesson #1) module you will begin by spending one week monitoring how you actually spend your time. You will then develop a preliminary time management plan. It is important to start this lesson immediately. It is OK to to do the Discussion Question for this lesson after the end of the Module. This will give you enough time to track how you spend time for an entire week.
In the Procrastination (Lesson #2) module you will examine and evaluate your tendency to procrastinate and discuss reasons why you procrastinate and how you might overcome procrastination.
In the Priorities (Lesson #3) module you will identify those things in your life that you must do, those that you would like to do, and those that are least important for you to do at the present time.
In the Setting Goals (Lesson #4) module you will set some specific goals for improving your time management strategies and overcoming any tendency you have to procrastinate
You can access the four modules (My Time, Procrastination, Priorities, and Goals) from the navigation bar above as well as from the drop down menu below.
Each lesson has Learning Outcomes, an Overview of the topic with instructions on how to complete the lesson, and a Self Assessment so you can take a look at your current skills in each area.
Each lesson has an Activity which will give you an opportunity to practice managing time, setting priorities, and developing goals. First you will learn about yourself, then you will learn about the topic by reading information from websites outside the tutorial, then you will do the activity.
At the end of all four lessons, you will be asked to submit a Summary Sheet to the discussion board.
It is particularly important to start this assignment immediately. You are to keep track of how you spend time for an entire week!
Let's Get Started
Begin by reading Chapter 5 in the textbook. Then go to the My Time module. There you will find directions about how to complete that module. The second module is Procrastination, followed by Priorities and Goal Setting. Before beginning My Time, read the comment below from online students to understand the importance of time management when taking online courses. After each module, complete the discussion question and Activity. Check the syllabus to see when the entire tutorial is to be completed.
In The Words Of Online Students
My biggest barrier to being an online student will be.....life. The time when I can focus all of my energies on being a student is over. Family and career have to come first in my life.
Procrastination is an online class is deadly. I have always been a procrastinator--I get things done--but with not much time to spare. In an online environment, I will be tempted to put things off and will likely get way behind.
I think one of my biggest problems in taking online classes is giving up time from other areas to do it. I do budget my time wisely. However, if my goal is to REALLY take online classes then I need to sit down and ANALYZE just exactly where that time online is going to come from and am I willing to pay the price of giving up time elsewhere.
When taking an online class, the most difficult issue is finding a set amount of time to get the work done. Anyone who thinks he/she can squeeze in an online class here and there had better think again. An online class should be treated like a traditional class when you set aside times for doing the work and staying on track.
