Using the Internet Effectively

Introduction
Most of us have spent a fair amount of time on the Internet by this point, but do we really know how to get around and do we really know what is true and what is a creation of someone's imagination being passed off as reality.  Let's learn to be critical internet users.

Information

These topic covers a great deal of material.  It is the type of material that is best learned when you have a need to know.  One approach is to scan the related websites and make a mental note of what is included so you can return when you need the information to complete assignments in your courses.  Another is to bookmark sites that you want to come back to at a later time.  For additional information about how to organize your bookmarks, read through this tutorial.

These two audio presentations provide excellent information about conducting effective internet searches:

There are four short audio/video presentations on this website.  Start with the Introduction.  Let your cursor rest on the Introduction link for a second.  A drop down menu appears from which you select the most appropriate file depending on which way you connect to the Internet.  His content is excellent, his presentation style is a little unusual.

Probably the hottest topic in this module is how do I know if I am plagiarizing?  Here is my current list of bookmarks about plagiarism:

Anti-Plagiarism Strategies
Glatt Plagiarism Program
Plagiarism in Colleges in USA
Plagiarism Screening Software
Plagiarism.org
Plagiarized.com - The Instructors Guide To Internet Plagiarism
Stop Internet Plagiarism Software

The questions for the week are: What effective Internet research strategies have you used?  How do you guard against plagiarizing the work of others?

What techniques do you have for getting accustomed to a online course website?

Ask a Counselor:
This is a place for you to ask me general questions about completing your Montgomery College degree or certificate, transferring to a four year college,
selecting a college major or choosing a career, or anything about being an online student.
Student Lounge:
This is a place for each of you to meet other online students from other online courses. Start conversations on any topic.....within reason:-).
Have fun.
