Academic Resources

Introduction

Both Montgomery College and the Internet provide excellent resources to assist you with your academic success.  As with on campus courses, the first place you should look for academic assistance is from your professor.  There are two benefits to this approach.  First, your professor is obviously most familiar with the requirements of your course.  Secondly, you are establishing a relationship with your professor that may have benefits in addition to the fact that she/he is the content expert.  Throughout your college career, keep looking for potential mentors in the field of study that is most interesting to you.

Information

Perhaps you are not earning the grades you hoped to be earning in your online course.  What are the options for getting help?

One option is to take advantage of the on campus MC resources that are available to all students.  Each of the three campuses have Math, Science, Writing, and Reading Learning Centers.  Look on this page for access to these and other specialized Learning Centers on each campus:  http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/exploremc/learningcenters.html

Look on this MC website for an even broader list of Academic Support options

Some online students are not able or willing to come to campus for services.  Here are some relevant resources from the MC website:

The Internet has many websites that provide academic support.  Here are just a few. By going to this Resource Page, you will find websites to help you improve your study skills, math and writing skills.  Learn more about how to calculate GPA, determine your learning style and figure out what impact your learning style will have on your success as an online learner.  Take a look at websites that help you conduct online research and how to most effectively use search engines.  Don't miss the sites about procrastination and goal setting.  There is a lot to learn that will help you become an academically successful online learner.

Managing assignments is sometimes a challenge.  Try this online assignment calculator from U of Minnesota.

Discussion

Join us on the Discussion Board
Online courses can be overwhelming because students have so much more responsibility for completing the course requirements without the assistance of a professor reminding them of due dates and deadlines.

What techniques do you have for getting work turned in on time?

Ask a Counselor:
This is a place for you to ask me general questions about completing your Montgomery College degree or certificate, transferring to a four year college, selecting a college major or choosing a career, or anything about being an online student.

Student Lounge:
This is a place for each of you to meet other online students from other online courses. Start conversations on any topic.....within reason:-).  Have fun!

Weekly Happenings

Check out the MC Events Calendar to see what's happening at the college or the Sponsored Events link to find out about Counseling and Advising activities on each campus.
